5 Years of Pulp Society : The Print Edition
23 January - 22 March 2025 - Pulp Society, New Delhi
Pulp Society is very excited to present 5 Years of Pulp: The Print Edition as we celebrate 5 years of Pulp Society. The exhibition is on view at B-247, Okhla Phase 1 in New Delhi from 23 January through 22 March 2025.
Pulp Society was conceptualised by Vrinda Suneja, with Jiten Thukral, and Sumir Tagra, in late 2019. With the curation and guidance of Sitara Chowfla, Pulp Society opened their doors in January 2020, with the show Imprint, After. We also have a printmaking studio (Pulp Studio), and started programs like the Pulp Editions (the annual collaborative show between the studio and the gallery), and the Paper Residency.
Unfortunately, our first show was followed by a global lockdown, and pandemic related closures. We did move to digital platforms, and explored a lot of collaborations, and programs, but the gallery was largely dormant for the year 2021. We resurrected the gallery in April 2022; getting Priyanshi Saxena as the new advisor, and curator; and shifting the leadership to Vidhi Suneja Jethi, keeping the leadership within the Sona Papers family, and the team ‘all women’!
We have since been programming continually , creating entities like PS.POD (for varied programs, events, engagements); DIY Print Making Kits; The Pulp Shop, PS iWall (an open backroom), QR codes with pricelists, among many others. We have been a platform for very young practices, often creating a gallery version of practices outside the traditional notions of art: like Aditya Raj, Harsimran Juneja, Osheen Siva, Jasjyot Singh Hans, and Rahee Punyashloka; and architect Rajat Sodhi, and Priyanka Shah, of SHED. We have also been creating bridges for new collaborations within India, and overseas.
We endeavour to continue pushing the boundaries of what art is, exploring all that paper can do, including sculptures, games, zines, and much more. We have also created a very approachable, anti white cube gallery, where price lists are available via barcodes on the wall, and the audience is invited to ‘hang out’ at the gallery space! For our summer programs, we created 2 shows: Summer Somethings, a platform for discovery for both artists, and audiences; where we also celebrate the work of our friends in the art world, and showcase some artists from the IMMERSE Fellowship every year, and collaborate with a South Asian Arts organisation to show unique, new voices to the folks in Delhi. The other is Paper and Play, an exhibition/ hang out zone with games, zines, magazines, toys, and books; practices that start with paper, and engage with a diverse audience in different ways.
As we complete 5 years, we are grateful for the all the artists, exhibitions, events, patrons, supporters, sponsors, installers, photographers, painters, friends, collectors, visitors, performers, and even grateful for the loiterers (who came all the way to Okhla to ‘hang out’ with us!)
We start the celebrations with what we started out to do: Print Making.
