About Us
“Pulp Society was born out of shared love for paper, and the lacuna for a platform to see art practices in PAPER in India by Vrinda Suneja. The name ‘Pulp Society’ was coined by dear friends of the gallery, Thukral & Tagra, encapsulating the vision of a community, a space, a studio, and a gallery that showcases, and encourages advents, and experiments with paper.
Having grown up around paper with Sona Fine Papers (my family’s business of fine papers), and my education in design, the terrain for an art, design, and all practices in paper was almost an inevitable endeavour for me.” - Vrinda Suneja, the founder of Pulp Society.
Pulp Society was conceptualised by Vrinda Suneja, with Jiten Thukral, and Sumir Tagra, in late 2019. With the curation and guidance of Sitara Chowfla, Pulp Society opened their doors in January 2020, with the show Imprint, After. We also have a printmaking studio, and started programs like the Pulp Editions (the annual collaborative show between the studio and the gallery), and the Paper Residency.
Unfortunately, our first show was followed by a global lockdown, and pandemic related closures. We did move to digital space, and explored a lot of collaborations, and programs, but the gallery was largely dormant for the year 2021. We resurrected the gallery in April 2022; Priyanshi S had joined the team as advisor and curator, with leadership gradually shifting to Vidhi Suneja Jethi and Mihika Rangwala, who now handles the gallery alongside Rekha as the accountant, keeping the team ‘all women’!
We have since been programming continually with entities like PS.POD (for varied programs, events, engagements), and curated shows with artists like Aditya Raj, Harsimran Juneja, Osheen Siva, and architects Rajat Sodhi, and Priyanka Shah, Rahee Punyashloka, Barkha Gupta, organisations such as Immerse Fellowship, Goa Open Arts, Danfe Arts, Gondwana Art Project, and Bridge Bharat. Pulp has also been continually showing exhibitions like Paper and Play, opening doors to a wider paper based practice, and Summer Somethings, the annual group show at the gallery.
Pulp Studio has been creating bridges for new collaborations with prestigious brands like Dior, IKEA, Royal Enfield, Ritu Kumar, and trusted by artists to bring their works to life.
We endeavour to continue pushing the boundaries of what art is, exploring all that paper can do, including sculptures, games, zines, and much more. We have also created a very approachable, anti white cube gallery, where price lists are available via barcodes on the wall, the backroom inventory is for all to see, and the audience is invited to ‘hang out’ at the gallery space!
