JAGADISH UPADHYA
"Every step in the image making process is an art in itself" - Jagadish Upadhya
Jagadish Upadhya is a Kathmandu based photographer who strictly practices film, develops them in chemistry prepared by himself and does his own printing. Born in Kupondole, Lalitpur in 1965 A.D he recalls visiting various studios as a kid and being amazed by what they handover. Photography was not the career path he picked at the beginning but he is happy to have come to it. Initially inspired by photographers such as Robert Duane Doisnau, Henri Cartier Bresson, Irwin Penn, Robert Maplethorp, he shot more on the street. Moments of the daily life and nuances of life caught on film slowly evolved as he was introduced to studio photography. The possibilities of the image making techniques in the studio gave him so much opportunity to express and experiment. Jagadish Upadhya still continues to practise his photography strictly with film and has no intention to change his way of working. To continue his passion and to pass down the skills of analogue photography he now runs a collective under the name "Film Foundry" where he provides the service of developing film, printing, as well as workshops on film photography. Recently "Film Foundry" organised an exhibition titled "Life In Analogue" where eighty eight silver gelatin prints were exhibited from 44 photographers. The exhibit presented by photographers ranged from the pioneer practitioners to people who are just introduced to the medium.
