“I knew Gieve Patel from a distance for a long time through his paintings. In the last five years, a kind of friendship developed over a dozen studio visits, and hundreds of emails. In the screen-print, Gieve looks out from the threshold of his home-studio as Bernini's Diana sprouts twigs and her legs turn to bark and an unfinished portrait dries against the wall. One of his artistic preoccupations was capturing the ineffable moment of transformation where the subject exists in more than one state simultaneously. What aging, drowning, mourning or death might do to the body. One might argue that Gieve thrived in these hybrid spaces. A village doctor, a widely-published poet whose poems are taught in schools, a playwright, and one of the most consequential Indian artists of the last forty years. If you’d ask him - he’d describe himself as a “middling” painter at best. This was characteristic of the kind of self-critical humility that pervaded conversations with Gieve. This work is a tribute to him.” - KM
