A boat called Phoolan was often found in the boats people communities of coastal Odisha while I grew up. This boat was unlike any other boat in that it was kept at reserve, only to be used at times to ferry back sailors if they were stuck in the sea. This almost mythically resilient boat being called after one of the most radical anti-caste feminist icons in modern Indian history speaks to the uncommon ways in which solidarities brew among the marginalised.
