“More than 150 years ago, education of girl child wasn’t even a part of the mainstream socio-political discourse, and in fact, those pushing for it were met with intense hostility and social boycott. Those with even a cursory knowledge of the history behind education in India will have heard of Savitribai Phule, who valiantly fought against the oppressive hierarchies of caste and gender to challenge untouchability and educate girls. Born on 3 January 1831 in Satara district of Maharashtra, Savitribai fought against huge odds for the rights of the oppressed and women’s empowerment. A social reformer, a pioneer in education, and poet - Savitribai lived the revolution she preached. Savitribai used to carry an extra sari while walking towards her school as what she was wearing would get soiled with the stones and dung hurled at her by the religious hooligans. Even when the waves of orthodox society were against her, she didn’t just survive it but herself became a bigger wave of progress and emancipation of people through education.” - SG
