Work: Untitled (Surmadani), Karachi, 2023
The exaggerated Surmedani is a sculptural work by Affan; taking the Surmedani (an object used by women to apply kohl/ kajal/surma in their eyes), a delicate, ornate, and feminine object, Affan amplifies it in size, and has men carry it around the city of Karachi as a performative experiment almost, to try and see how the men, and the city reacts to this zanana parade. This image is a documentation of the said ‘walk’.

She has been writing letters to her late mother, Mumtaz, as a way to feel close and continue conversations with her. The process of crafting these letters resulted in prints using secret scripts, repurposing pieces of her mother’s clothing to make into weavings, paper, thread etc.

Work: The Moon Is My Therapist, 2023
The moon is my therapist, to whom I open up time and again. It is my connection to self. When it is half, I revel in its crescent glory. When it is full, I am fulfilled. The moon knows me best. It doesn’t judge, it only smiles. And what more can I ask? Despite the rush of daily life and loss, the moon remains—round and ready to listen to what I have to say.” ~ Gautami

Work: Dr. Patel's Studio - Apollo Bunder, 2023
I knew Gieve Patel from a distance for a long time through his paintings. In the last five years, a kind of friendship developed over a dozen studio visits, and hundreds of emails.
In the screen-print, Gieve looks out from the threshold of his home-studio as Bernini's Diana sprouts twigs and her legs turn to bark and an unfinished portrait dries against the wall. One of his artistic preoccupations was capturing the ineffable moment of transformation where the subject exists in more than one state simultaneously. What aging, drowning, mourning or death might do to the body.
One might argue that Gieve thrived in these hybrid spaces. A village doctor, a widely-published poet whose poems are taught in schools, a playwright, and one of the most consequential Indian artists of the last forty years.
If you’d ask him - he’d describe himself as a “middling” painter at best. This was characteristic of the kind of self-critical humility that pervaded conversations with Gieve. This work is a tribute to him.” ~ Keshav
Sajid Wajid Sheikh
Sajid Wajid Shaikh is a Mumbai based multimedia artist. Following a set of driving principles influenced by intuition, his works take on different forms conceptually, and in mediums. The resulting works take on abstract, distorted, sometimes grotesque forms. Shaikh’s works have been shown at numerous exhibitions and public projects which include Mumbai Urban Art Festival, 2022; Art + Charlie, 2020; Method Art Space, 2019; and Kona Art Project, 2019, among others. Shaikh lives and works in Mumbai.
Work: Silence (the only promise ever kept), 2023
This conceptual exploration delves into the prescient visions of Aldous Huxley's ‘Brave New World’, and George Orwell's ‘1984’, both eerily forecasting aspects of our contemporary world. It sheds light on the discernible erosion of fundamental human liberties, notably the diminishing freedom of speech.

Work: Savitrimai: a wave of progress , 2023
More than 150 years ago, education of girl child wasn’t even a part of the mainstream socio-political discourse, and in fact, those pushing for it were met with intense hostility and social boycott. Those with even a cursory knowledge of the history behind education in India will have heard of Savitribai Phule, who valiantly fought against the oppressive hierarchies of caste and gender to challenge untouchability and educate girls.
Born on 3 January 1831 in Satara district of Maharashtra, Savitribai fought against huge odds for the rights of the oppressed and women’s empowerment. A social reformer, a pioneer in education, and poet - Savitribai lived the revolution she preached.
Savitribai used to carry an extra sari while walking towards her school as what she was wearing would get soiled with the stones and dung hurled at her by the religious hooligans. Even when the waves of orthodox society were against her, she didn’t just survive it but herself became a bigger wave of progress and emancipation of people through education.” ~Siddhesh

Work: We Are, 2023
This work is a play on the word VR (Virtual Reality), and We Are (the people), as represented by a postage stamp, an archaic tool of communication; with Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, representing the best ideals of democracy to many, wearing Virtual Reality goggles, attempting to grapple with, and interact/ play and ply with this Brave New World, that has its people swimming between the internet, social media, and real worlds, living in multiple avatars simultaneously.

Work: Body of A Floating Landscape, 2023
This work attempts to explore my physical appearance, intertwined with landscapes and narratives of my present, and past. Growing up in rural and tribal communities has shaped my perspective, allowing me to weave the occupations, daily rituals, and natural surroundings into my work. One of the core themes in my work is the portrayal of my body as a landscape—a repository of all the stories, emotions, and memories I carry. In this work, I show the profound interconnectedness of my imaginative life.. These symbolic elements represent my collective journey; we often fail to comprehend the value of immediate life in time and can associate myself with various ideas.” ~ Suroj

Work: Rear Window, 2023
“Rear Window comprises the many windows to myriad people. It acknowledges the uniqueness of the individual, and also celebrates the common thread of humanity. With each peek, is revealed a face, which is defined, further by the elements around. Cacti and Flowers depict the duality and struggle in living, leading to an idea of balance. A reminder that in the ordinary there are nuances of the extraordinary efforts made to sustain in this wide big world. The constant desire to attain balance and the uniqueness of each struggle of each individual, no matter where s/he is placed, are the governing theme to this work.
In these woodcuts, I deliberately stuck to the black and white tonal palette, to project the unfolding of pages of a book. The size of the page and its format is uniform. One can be seen peeking into the windows of so many people who could be living in the same building, the same city and yet, appreciative of their different struggles and obstacles. It is to understand, and celebrate the uniqueness of each of these narratives.” ~ Tsering
